bookmark_borderIssue 45 – You’re the Apple of Our Eye This February

Hey, Smart Home Pros!

Oh, February. Love is in the air. Heart-shaped chocolates and the same three colors of roses overflow from every public market and street corner. Dating apps are in full swing. If you aren’t braving crowds by going out for Valentine’s Day, maybe you’re using your high-speed network to watch a movie or set your dinner scene with some music and vibrant lighting. Or maybe, it’s just an ordinary day of bingeing the newest Netflix series, playing video games, and swiping on Tinder. Regardless of your Valentine’s disposition, we just wanna say we love you a whole watt. You’re our everything bagel; we donut know what we’d do without you. So in the spirit of cheesy Valentine’s traditions, please accept this less-than-brie-lliant poem.

Control4 is red,
OvrC is blue,
Stay tuned to see new product features, Smart Skills, KB articles, tips tricks and more!
It’s our gift to you.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I Can’t Imagine a Life Without You, OS 3.3.2

Control4 OS 3.3.2 holds the key to my heart. By heart, I mean successful integration with new products! This release includes a new Daylight feature that automates Vibrant tunable white LEDs to warm, cool, brighten, and dim throughout the day to match the progression of natural sunshine. The update also adds the fully featured Voice Coordinator Agent and provides drivers for Luma x20 IP cameras and NVRs, as well as drivers for Halo and Halo Touch.

Halo:

Deep Sleep Timeout period to extend battery life (Halo and Halo Touch)
Digital Labels and programming for the Custom Buttons (Halo only)

Note: Like Neeo, these drivers cannot be found in the Online Database nor the My Drivers tab, because the drivers auto-add through the Halo Setup Wizard (FTUE).

Luma X20 IP Cameras:

Using a Control4 touchscreen or the Control4 App (for iPhone or iPad, Android phone, or tablet), customers can try out these new features and controls to:

View live video from grid view
Rearrange cameras through the UI with the new button at the top right
Set camera settings and configurations (including trip lines, motion zones, and PTZ controls) can be set from the camera’s individual Live View page.

Are you Wi-Fi? Because I’m totally feeling a connection.
We’re Meant to Be, Luma X20

The air may be buzzing with romance, but it’s also buzzing with excitement! The new generation of Luma surveillance is born. The Luma X20 IP family provides an all-new end-to-end solution with IP cameras, NVRs, OvrC integration, and end-customer app and OvrC experiences.

New and improved end customer app: No plugins needed for desktop/web viewing with Luma View!
Faster setup: OvrC integration for full camera configuration.
Good things come in small packages: up to 30%smaller form factor for more discreet installs (vs. Luma X10 models).
Intelligent analytics = smarter events: AI power inside every IP camera, and advanced event support in NVRs. Includes advanced human, vehicle, and non-motor vehicle detection; as well as AI-filtered events that reduce false notifications and enables fast filtering in the all-new Luma View app.
Higher video quality: Up to 8MP cameras, and NVRs that can record 8MP on all channels simultaneously.
Available options for IR, Starlight and Color at Night: Luma X20 IP cameras offer a variety of options for low-light viewing, including new Color at Night offerings that show full color in nighttime settings. Color at Night cameras produce a clearer scene from the most minimal sources of ambient light.
Deeper integration: with Control4, get live thumbnails, automatic resolution detection, advanced event triggering; plus all products are ONVIF conformant and NDAA compliant

bookmark_borderIssue 44 – Cheers to January 2023!

Hey, Smart Home Pros!

Congratulations! We made it to 2023 with an entire new year of possibilities! One of my favorite parts is witnessing societal tendencies to challenge the definition of what it means to be our best selves. If the concept of new year’s resolutions isn’t for you, don’t worry. You can use the following exercise at any time!
Visualize something you’d like to achieve, no matter how big or small (personal, professional, or both).
Write down the first step you might take toward achieving that goal in a single sentence.
Now pat yourself on the back! You just made progress toward your goal. Numerous studies show that goal setting is a crucial step to success.

P.S. If your goal was related to Snap One Education, you’re in luck! We have plenty of new product features, Smart Skills, KB articles, tips, tricks, and more! If you visualized grabbing your favorite lunch, we support that too. We’ll still be here with the brain food when you’re ready.

Happy New Year!

New Year, New AP!

Following the recent release of the Araknis Networks Wi-Fi 6 820 Indoor Access Point, we welcome the Araknis Networks Wi-Fi 6 520 Indoor Access Point!

Key features include:

Up to 2.5 Gbps LAN port connection: Support multi-gig jobs.
Enhanced SSID customization: Customize fast roaming and band steering per SSID.
Wi-Fi Management via OvrC: Simple setup for multiple-AP jobs including guest network configuration.
2×2 antenna: More powerful connection for more devices with greater throughput so you don’t have to sacrifice network speed for size. Compared to the 4×4 antenna offered by the 820 AP, the 520 is a perfect fit for smaller deployments.
DFS (Dynamic Frequency Selection) channel support to increase the number of Wi-Fi channels when available.
Wi-Fi 6: Supports the new standard for increased speed, coverage, and capacity. Can extend the battery life of Wi-Fi 6 connected devices.
Supports OFDMA, MU-MIMO, 1024 QAM, and BSS Coloring to optimize bandwidth efficiency, thus increasing throughput while decreasing power consumption.

Note: Mixing Araknis Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5 Series Access Points on the same job will impact performance and is not recommended. Fast roaming between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5 devices is not supported.

Meet Your Technical Support Agent!

You may have spoken to Kevin Wojtaszek if you’ve contacted Technical Support. Kevin is a Level-2 Tech Support agent based in Conover, NC. He supports our Partners through various queues, including Infrastructure, Premier Infrastructure, Clare, Visualint, and Control4. Kevin recently won the TRUE GRIT award for Snap One Technical Support, which recognizes our Tech Support agents for offering top-notch support to our Partners! His teammates characterize him by his positive attitude, willingness to jump in and help out on tough calls, and resourcefulness to diagnose the root cause of the issue. He enjoys console gaming, NHL hockey (especially the Detroit Red Wings), craft beer, and Transformers when he isn’t supporting our Partners.
New Firmware, Who Dis?

Last month we released Araknis router firmware v1.2.23 to address connectivity issues related to short WAN lease times seen with ISPs in some areas. This firmware is now available through OvrC and the following product pages for the affected routers:
AN-110-RT-2L1W
AN-110-RT-2L1W-WIFI
AN-310-RT-4L2W

This new firmware improves the router’s ability to accommodate short WAN lease times provided by the ISP. There is, however, a prevalent known issue. If there is a space in the WAN name, it can impact NSD failover events. The solution: through OvrC or local UI, remove any spaces in, before, or after the WAN name.

Read more on the known issue here.

Roku TV Driver Secrets

Ever had trouble getting a Roku TV to work with Control4? If so, read on…

In addition to supporting Roku Media Players, Control4 has a specific driver for Roku TVs (smart televisions that use Roku as their operating system). You can find this driver by typing Roku TV in the Search tab in Composer Pro.

When you read the Support section on the driver’s Documentation tab in Composer Pro, you will find this paragraph under the heading “Troubleshooting”:

“Most issues found are related to the Roku devices powering down when not in use. Many Roku players do not maintain a network connection when powered off and so cannot be controlled or woken up over IP. Make sure that all players are set to remain powered on at all times.”

So, how do you make sure the Roku TV is “set to remain powered on at all times”? It’s actually pretty simple—although a little hard to find. After you have configured the Roku TV driver in Composer Pro, grab the original remote that came with the TV and follow these steps:

1. Power on the Roku TV.
2. On the Roku TV’s menu, navigate to Settings > System > Power Fast TV start.
3. Select the Enable ‘Fast TV start’ checkbox.

That’s it! Now the TV should work beautifully with Control4. We’ve tested this solution with TCL and Hisense brand Roku TVs using an Ethernet or Wi-Fi network connection.

Note: The name of the ‘Fast TV start’ feature may vary slightly depending on the firmware version and brand of Roku TV. If this feature is not listed on the Roku TV’s menu, then chances are that model of TV does not support ‘Fast TV start’ and cannot be powered on by a command sent over the IP network.

How to Migrate a Project to a New Controller

As a Control4 installer, we know that you will need to migrate a project from an older controller to a new one at some point. We also know that because controllers handle numerous functions, it isn’t as simple as backing up an existing project and loading it on a new controller. That’s why we created the Controller Migration Wizard! Here is a quick overview of how it works:

1. Add the new controller to the existing project.
2. Update the project to the latest OS version.
3. Use the Controller Migration Wizard to move the project
Check out this Smart Skill for more important details around this process!

Managing OvrC Wi-Fi Management

Since the new Wi-Fi 6 Araknis Access Points release, now is the perfect time to refresh your knowledge of the Wi-Fi Management feature in OvrC for Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 APs! This feature offers a central location for quick configuration of multiple access points, which saves time during setup and troubleshooting.

Back by Popular Demand… the Christmas Tree Experience Button Driver!

Once again we are sending each of you a holiday gift from us—the Christmas Tree Experience Button driver. Use this driver freely to add a little holiday fun for your clients.

The Christmas Tree Experience Button driver makes it possible to control Christmas tree lights, or other holiday lights, from the Navigator on a TV and/or touchscreen.

This driver is only available to Smart Home Pro Tech Newsletter readers (it’s not available in the Composer Pro driver database). We’ve recently updated it to take advantage of the new features that have been added to the experience button driver template, e.g., setting LED colors for keypad buttons connected to the driver, etc.

Download the driver here.

Adding the Christmas Tree Experience Button to a Client’s Project
1. Download the driver to your computer.
2. Open a client’s project in Composer Pro.
3. In the Driver menu, click Add or Update Driver or Agent.
4. Navigate to the christmas_tree.c4z file on your computer and select it.
5. Click Open.
6. In System Design, select the room in the project tree where you want to add the driver.
7. Click the Search tab in the Items pane, verify that the Local check box is selected.
8. Type Christmas Tree in the search box, and press Enter.
9. Double-click Christmas Tree in the driver list to add it to the room.
10. Click the driver, labeled Scenario, in the project tree.
11. Click the Documentation tab in the Properties pane and follow the instructions to program the experience button driver behavior.

After you download the driver and add it in Composer Pro the first time, it is available for you to add to any client’s project. You can search for it in the Search tab as long as the Local checkbox is selected. If you have used previous versions of the Christmas Tree Experience Button driver, following the above instructions updates the driver for controllers with a previous version of the driver installed.

NOTE: This driver requires one of the following Zigbee devices to control Christmas lights:Control4® Wireless Plug-In Outlet Switch
Control4® Outdoor Plug-In Outlet Switch
Control4® Receptacle Outlet Switch

We’d love to see how you integrate this driver in your clients’ projects! If you take pictures or video of an implementation of the driver, please share them with us by emailing education@snapone.com.

Happy Holidays!

These OvrC Improvements Will Come in Candy

We’ve sweetened your OvrC experience with the release of OvrC Pro App Version 7.0 and OvrC Cloud App Version 2.37.0! These updates improve the process of adding new locations and enhance third-party product management.

OvrC Pro App Version 7.0
Now, when select models of Sony AVRs, sound bars, and line array speakers are paired with an OvrC Pro agent host device (Araknis/Pakedge routers, Control4 controllers, or the OvrC Pro Hub), you will see information for advanced troubleshooting. New capabilities for these Sony products include:

Power status and control for all zones
Currently selected input status for all zones
Volume level status for all zones, plus mute/unmute control
Firmware version status and update
Improvements made to identifying Sony Bravia TVs that are wirelessly connected to the network so that the existing third-party integration on supported models show up properly in OvrC as Sony devices

For more advanced configuration, the local web UI of the device can be accessed remotely using the OvrC WebConnect feature.

OvrC Cloud App Version 2.37.0
Now allows automatic transfer of third-party devices to the location where they were most recently scanned by an OvrC Pro agent.

Note: OvrC-enabled devices (a WattBox, e.g.) still require a manual transfer from one project to another. If the locations are within the same Partner account, this can be done directly within your OvrC account. If the original and new customer locations are tied to different OvrC accounts, then they must be transferred using the Take Over process.

“Add Location”
Add a new location for an existing customer by clicking the “traffic light” menu on the right-side of the customer row. From there, you can edit customer information, edit location information, or add another new location.
Address Line 2 has been added as a field (without impacting the Google verified address or how the pin appears on the map in OvrC). When the address is selected, it’s broken out into separate fields for address 1, address 2, city, state or province, and postal code instead of a single line of text containing all fields.
If the Broom Fits, Fly It

Remember to check on your existing clients’ Control4 OS versions! Keeping your systems updated provides the most integration and interoperability options and presents the latest in functionality, integrations, and reliability. While the current OS 3 release version is recommended for systems that support it, systems that cannot update due to legacy, unsupported hardware can still be updated to the final build of its OS generation. Like a witch’s broom during the witching hour, we know time flies when you’re hard at work. Luckily, we have it all spelled out for you in the Recommended and Supported Versions of Control4 OS and Composer Pro.

bookmark_borderIssue 40 – Remember To Celebrate Yourselves This September

Hey, Smart Home Pros!

For some, Labor Day symbolizes the end of summer or a bank holiday. If you’re like me, it unlocks a core memory of an overplayed Labor Day Sale commercial for some store I’ve never visited, but can still recall the exact slogan and jingle for. Thankfully, it also symbolizes something with much more merit: an annual acknowledgement of workers and their achievements in history. It is safe to say if you are reading this newsletter, you are a worker. On behalf of Snap One Education, I’d like to thank you for your contribution to this industry and beyond! While the history of Labor Day is definitely worth celebrating, so are the workers of today as we write the history of the future. As a famous person once said, “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why we call it the present.”

P.S. If you’re now struggling with an earworm of an overplayed Labor Day ad, keep reading! These new product features, smart skills, KB articles, tips, tricks, and more will cleanse your mental palate!

Happy Labor Day!

Access Networks Is Here to Flex…with BeamFlex+

Access Networks Unleashed Access Points are here! These Wi-Fi 6 access points are equipped with a variety of helpful features to help you tackle the most challenging environments.

  • True wireless controller built into each access point: simple setup and easy to manage
  • Real-time signal monitoring and tuning from Ruckus’ proprietary BeamFlex technology

How does BeamFlex technology….well, flex? BeamFlex focuses Wi-Fi energy at each specific device when and where it’s needed, rather than broadcasting it in all directions like most APs. This technology also allows Wi-Fi signals to broadcast from the access point on both a horizontal and vertical axis simultaneously. Using different antenna orientations not only ensures the clearest and strongest Wi-Fi signal, but it also reduces interference from other Wi-Fi devices and increases signal strength.

Check out the new and coming soon models here.
See more helpful guides and tips in the Tech Community.

I believe Wi-can-Fi.

The Key 2 a More Versatile Connection: Control4 Wired Keypad Connector V2!

The Wired Keypad Connector V2 has been redesigned to enable two separate wire connections (one on each side of the connector) for increased wiring ease and connection reliability. This means you can wire in from the Bus Ethernet Gateway and wire out to the next Wired Keypad in the daisy chain. The connector itself then snaps into the back of the Wired Keypad. You can use it on the C4 Decora Wired Keypads (C4-KCB-xx) and the 4-Channel Dry Bus Contact Input Module (C4-DCIM4). These connectors will be available as a 20-pack and will eventually ship with the previously mentioned models.

Let Us Shed Some Light on the Subject of Lighting Compatibility

Did you know that you can send in your light fixtures and bulbs for C4 compatibility testing? This is how it works:

  • Send an email to lightingcompatibility@control4.com with the make and model of the fixture/bulb that you would like to ship in for testing.
  • If accepted, supply a sample for testing.
  • A Control4 lighting engineer tests the light fixture or bulb by using an oscilloscope to check for voltage and current spikes that could damage the dimmer and/or the fixture/bulb over time, and a lux meter to check actual brightness levels when dimmed
  • This process takes approximately 2–3 weeks. We will arrange to have your test sample shipped back to you from our testing facility.

Existing lighting compatibility reports can be found on the Dealer Portal.

You have a bright future lumen ahead.

It’s the Final Countdown… of Compatible OS Versions for the HC-800 Controller and USB Installer

OS 3.3.0 will be the final compatible OS version for the legacy HC-800 controller. This means that any HC-800 will need to be removed from projects before any system updates to OS 3.3.1 or beyond. Additionally, the USB Installer will not be updated to support the CORE Series controllers or OS 3.3.0. This product was built for scenarios where the internet was unavailable for an OS update. However, the need for this tool has decreased as connectivity options have become more abundant. The USB installer can still be used to update systems with HC and EA Controllers up to OS 3.2.4. bookmark_borderIssue 38 – Reach For the Sky in July

Hey, Smart Home Pros!

When I think of July in the U.S., I dream of fireworks, grilling, and Independence Day. Did you know that aside from Independence Day, July also marks other historical events and some exciting anniversaries? Zip codes were introduced nationwide in 1963, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson, and Neil Armstrong landed on the moon in 1969. July is also National Ice Cream Month, National Hot Dog Month, and National Anti-Boredom Month. To honor the spirit of Anti-Boredom … I digress. Treat yourself to an ice cream cone and dive into our new product features, Smart Skills, KB articles, tips, tricks, and more!

With the power of knowledge, anything is popsicle.

Happy July!

Dropping Knowledge on MoIP Audio Dropouts

Are you experiencing audio dropouts on your Binary MoIP system when using Pakedge MS switches? You can avoid this on new installations and fix your existing systems by creating an Access Control List for each MS switch with a connected MoIP device. Read the full article to see how to configure an ACL rule for new and existing MoIP installations.

DS2 Good to Be True!

We’re excited to announce that the DS2 driver update v259 is now available! This is the third update in a series aimed at improving the stability, use, and setup experience of the DS2 Door Station. The latest update provides several bug fixes, documentation updates, directory paths for OS 3.3.X support, and the latest DS2 firmware (2.33.5.42.15). More than half of the deployed DS2s in the field have not been updated to the previous version (v258), which significantly increases the risk of a poor customer experience. Update your projects, like now, to the v259 driver update for all Control4 customers on both OS2.x and 3.x. Find out more on the latest and how to update here. Your future self will be happy that you did.

Knock knock. Who’s there and why didn’t you use the DS2 button?
