Changes in CLOvrC Pro Hub

The OvrC® Pro Hub device will no longer be claimed when found in a network scan. Instead, it will have to be manually claimed to the location. This makes it the ideal tool for account takeovers. This change does not impact any Araknis® or Pakedge® router or Control4® controllers. These devices will continue to be claimed through a network scan or manually as usual.

To learn more about the recommended process for an account takeover using an OvrC Pro Hub, check out this post in the Tech Community.

Pro Tip: Carry an OVRC-300-PRO specifically for takeovers. Once the takeover is complete, you can use the device acting as the OvrC Pro agent in the location to perform all tasks.
Did you hear that scientists figured out how to measure the weight of a rainbow? Turns out it’s pretty light.

Chrome Browser HTTPS Certificate Error: “Your connection is not private”

If you encounter the Chrome browser HTTPS certificate error “Your connection is not private” while using a MacOS or Windows machine, you’re not alone. This may happen when trying to reach pages using a secure web page (secure HTTP/HTTPS). When this error occurs, the page won’t provide an option to bypass and won’t let you reach the login page.
Solution: To push past this page, click somewhere on it, and then type the phrase ‘thisisunsafe‘ anywhere on the page to get through to the device UI. Alternatively, you can use a browser other than Chrome to avoid this.

Use This Workaround for OpenVPN Connect App and Araknis x10 Routers

Snap One is aware of an issue where the newer OpenVPN Connect app versions do not allow connections to Araknis 110 and 310 Series routers on firmware versions 1.2.25 and below. We are actively researching a resolution that will minimize any inconvenience to our Partners while aligning with OpenVPN’s updated security standards.

The current workaround:
  • Go into OpenVPN’s Settings.
  • Scroll down to Advanced Settings.
  • Change the Security Level to Insecure.
This security selection may change if the router is running a more up-to-date firmware version.

Note: OpenVPN is an open-source software provider and reserves the right to change its security requirements at any time. In this instance, OpenVPN heightened its security criteria standards for encryption. Consequently, the current security encryption for OpenVPN connections on Araknis x10 series routers is now regarded as “Insecure,” according to OpenVPN’s new assessment.

Order Matters When Configuring Control4 Keypad Dimmers

Configuring Min On and Max On levels is a great way to optimize the dimming range for a load controlled by a variety of Control4 keypad dimmers. This feature is often required for LED loads that don’t turn on at low levels of dimming. Snap One has identified an error that exists in calculating the Min On level that results in the functional Min On level being adjusted when the Max On level is changed.

The suggested workaround:
Configure the Max On level first, then adjust the Min On level.

Hey, Integrator Pros!

Consider this month’s edition a small token of our affection – your personal, heart-shaped user guide for the numerous products you support. P.S. Are you the Tech Community? Because you’ve got everything I’ve been searching for.

Choosing The One is All About PoE Budgeting

In life, love, and business, meticulous decisions are a must. Lucky for you, we’ve written a guide to help you find the Right One (PoE switch for your application, that is). Those who proactively calculate the total PoE budget required by connected devices are more likely to spec the proper switch for the installation. An underperforming PoE switch can cause avoidable performance & reliability issues throughout the system, so choosing the proper PoE switch saves time and money. Find how much PoE a product requires, and the total PoE a switch can offer, under the Specs tab on the product page.

Read more in the Tech Community on selecting the proper PoE switch with the correct PoE budget.

Note: The most common mistake technicians make when calculating PoE budget in an existing install is only looking at the current power consumption shown on the switch’s web GUI/OvrC. This means when devices operate at peak PoE consumption, your switch may not provide enough power, which can cause a variety of issues.

Lots to Love in the Latest Vibrant® Linear Lighting Launch

In the year since we unveiled the Vibrant Linear Lighting Micro-Certification, we’ve analyzed course data and gathered feedback and suggestions from local training. Now, it’s even better, thanks to the following updates:
  • Reorganizing the course to improve the flow
  • Adding and updating Axxess control content
  • Updating DMX sections to include accurate, practical diagrams
  • Updating the learning assessments
  • Updating navigation control
These updates went live in January. Technicians already enrolled do not need to re-enroll. However, technicians in the middle of a course will restart that course.

  • Create a Macro.
  • Program the MV Preset.
Note: Sources in an MV session cannot be streamed elsewhere until the session ends. These instructions include a Macro configuration to ensure the B-960 transmitters and transceivers disconnect so they can join the MV session.

When should I deploy a CA-10?

All your questions about the CA-10 are answered HERE in our FAQ sheet.

Below are current top issues to know so you can best help your customers.
“My customer’s Apple TV driver stopped working”

The recent Apple TV OS 13 firmware update includes an API change that stops the 4K and Gen4 Apple TV models from working with the Gen 1-3 driver. Please use the info in Knowledgebase Article 1833 to reconfigure using the current drivers.

Android 10 Remote Camera Views

There is an issue when viewing cameras remotely with the newly released Android 10, currently supported on Pixel mobile devices.
An update to the mobile apps to support Android 10 is coming in the near future. Find more info in Knowledgebase Article 4830

Using Composer Pro 3.1.0 and new with older versions of Virtual Director

Virtual Director is a software emulation of a Control4 controller that allows you to view and configure a project in the absence of a physical controller. Like all older versions, Composer Pro 3.1.0 and newer install a matching version of Virtual Director. In rare circumstances, it may be desirable to use a new version of Composer Pro to connect to an older version of Virtual Director. To do so, simply download, reinstall, and run the corresponding version of Composer Pro. (Bear in mind that installing Composer Pro 3.1.0 or later will replace any existing 3.xx.xx installation on your computer.) In the future, Virtual Director will be included with every new OS management package, and Composer Pro will allow you to choose among versions of Virtual Director.

Getting Access to the Control4 Dealer and Education Portals

Ashley here, checking in on you guys. I receive a lot of questions about the Education Portal. So, I’m here to help and hopefully clarify a few things. If you continue to have issues or questions message us at education@control4.com

In order to use the Control4 Education Portal to view Smart Skills, take courses, and get certified, you must first have access to the Control4 Dealer Portal. Please make sure one of the dealer portal administrators (at your company) has added you as a user under their account. They can do this in Account > User Management (only visible to account admins).

Enrolling and Becoming a Control4 Associate Installer

If you wish to enroll in the Associate Installer and become certified, you must first have access to the Control4 Dealer Portal (see above section). Once logged in, find Education in the left hand navigation menu. From there select Course Catalog from the drop down button in the upper left corner, then select Learning Paths from the top center navigation. From there you can Enroll in Associate Installer. You must finish all five courses. Course 5, “How to sign up and prepare for Automation Programmer,” is required to be completed in order to register for the Automation Programmer course.

Signing up for Automation Programmer Certification

After you finish the Associate Installer course, you should be able to enter the Education Portal. Go to Catalog and select Automation Programmer Certification. You will be notified when you are approved to register for a session of the class. After you received the enrollment email, re-enter the Education Portal, then select My Courses > Automation Programmer Certification, then click Launch.

The Tech Community: The New Site for Technical Support
You–the Smart Home Pros who specialize in all the sophisticated technologies that make amazing Smart Homes possible–nominated Control4 for CEPro’s coveted platinum Quest for Quality 2019 award. That kind of vote drives us to raise the bar and serve you even better. So today we announce the Tech Community, the new support site in the dealer portal designed to help you get more information and faster answers on the technology that we all love to work with.

The Tech Community completely replaces the old Support landing page in the dealer portal. When you go to Support in the left-hand navigation, or go to tech.control4.com, you go straight into the Community. That’s where you’ll find the knowledgebase, chat, and all of the other resources you rely on.

Why do we call it a “community?” Instead of a static web page catalog of resources, the Tech Community connects you with the massive base of knowledge and expertise of all the other people who work in creating Smart Home solutions. Foremost is the new Q&A feature, where you can ask a tech-related question and the answer could just as easily come from another technician as it could from one of our support agents at Control4. That gives you access to a type of knowledge-sharing that has so far been limited to a few online venues (like Facebook groups and Reddit pages). With the Tech Community, you can trust that the knowledge you contribute will be viewed by other professionals also interested in the same topic—and they can add to your contribution from their own experience.

Here’s the list of everything new or updated in the Tech Community:
Knowledgebase – Backed by major improvements to search, the support knowledgebase is now more readable, subscribable and interactive.
Questions & Answers – When a knowledgebase article doesn’t exist for what you are looking for, you can ask the community, allowing you to tap into the knowledge of tens of thousands of technicians as well as Control4’s worldwide support team.
Best Answers – When you get a great answer to your question, you can flag an answer as “best.” That way, no one has to go mining for nuggets in endless forum threads that sometimes wander far from the original question.
Topics – You can browse through grouped areas of interest known as “Topics.” You can even follow Topics to see every Q&A or Knowledgebase Article in real time as they are added.
Featured Topics – We feature three topics on the main page to show you what is new and relevant in the community, or even trending.
Follow Others – In any community, there are the most valuable players…those who stand out from among their peers. You can follow other users (like a favorite support agent or helpful technician) to see their contributions in real time.
Email Notifications – Get email notifications on updates that are worthy of your inbox.
Profiles – You can see others’ certifications to help you decide whether their answers are backed by expertise.
Helpful Resources – This menu lists the most sought after information, including device resets, restore procedures, as well as the latest software updates and patches.

Check it out.
Summer is here! And what better way to celebrate summer than discussing the functionality of the Mockupancy driver!
The Mockupancy driver simulates a family being home. It records the normal use of lights, shades, and entertainment while the home is occupied by sampling the state of each device every 15 minutes over 7 days. Then, while the family is away, the driver’s playback mode uses that information to turn devices on and off similar to the patterns recorded by the sample.

You enable homeowners to use Mockupancy by adding the driver to the project and showing it on the Navigator in at least one room. When Mockupancy is added to a project’s Navigator, touchscreens and the mobile app display these icons.Search for “Mockupancy” in the driver database and read the documentation to learn more.

New & Updated Drivers
New drivers in the online database include…

Updated Smart Home OS 3 Version 3.0.0.563304 Bug Fixes
To simplify patching already-updated systems and shorten the time you spend on new updates, we have released a new build of Smart Home OS 3.

This build (3.0.0.563304-res) adds no features or functionality. It fixes bugs that were found after the initial release (build 3.0.0.562835-res). Update any site experiencing one or more of the issues listed below as soon as possible.

The 3.0.0.562835-res build has been removed from our update servers. Composer Pro and Composer Express will indicate “Update Available” for any system that has been updated to a previous build of OS 3. We suggest updating all systems to this build, even if not noticeably affected by the bugs addressed in the build.

Qobuz

Qobuz, pronounced Ko-buz, delivers full, uncompressed high-resolution audio (up to 192 kHz/24bit), taking advantage of the high-performance audio capabilities of Control4 and Triad electronics and speakers.

Each copy of the driver supports a single login, so if you have multiple accounts you want to use in a project, add one copy of the driver for each account.

Each driver supports an unlimited number of streams.

Qobuz counts all the streams from one Control4 system as one location and does not impose a limit on how many independent streams that the system can run.

Starting streaming from a different site (the Qobuz website, mobile apps, another hardware player) will end all Control4 streams on that account.

  • Requires C4 OS 2.10.2 or later
  • Active Qobuz account

Hey Smart Home Pros!

Here’s a fun Facebook response from a reader reacting to last month’s edition:
“Great stuff. The trick will be if they sustain them…”
Well, here’s issue #2, pal! Thank you to all those who sent us feedback. You asked for more driver news and more tips and tricks. Below, that’s just what you’ll see! Plus our feature article this month comes to you from Brad Baldwin, Director of User Experience who lead the effort to bring OS 3 to life. Naturally most of this issue focuses on OS 3. Read on!

Control4

Control4 Smart Home OS 3 has hundreds…no, make that thousands of enhancements driven from customer and dealer feedback. It was a blast to work these into the new customer experience. Which are my favorites? Here are just a few.

Favorite Rooms – I love swiping quickly between my family room, master bedroom, kitchen, and office.
Audio Favorites – My one-click Favorites to play Radio Paradise on TuneIn; The Beatles White Album (Super Deluxe) in MQA from Tidal Masters; and my Radiohead playlist.
On Screen interface – I added Favorites for Netflix and Amazon Prime on Roku; Xfinity; Radio Paradise; lighting scenes; and my door locks and garage doors so they are what I see as soon as I press the red Control4 button.
Music distribution – Sending music to rooms is available from the new Media Bar on the Room, Now Playing, or Sessions Screens.
All Rooms + Filter in Lighting – It’s easier than ever to see which lights the kids left on.
Volume tap – on the volume slider, I use the tap-the-slider option to change volume up or down a couple of percentage points.

You can read all the items above and much more in the OS 3 Release Notes.

The Certification Program

Life’s better when everything works together. We want Control4 systems to work seamlessly with all the key components of today’s digital home. This means our customers are happier, our dealers are happier and our partners are happier. We ensure this seamless integration by working with partners in our Connects with Control4 Certification Program.

DS2 Driver Version 236 Now Available

Bugs Addressed
DRIV-1276: The DS2 would send camera image information that was captured before the triggered event. This would manifest in behavior such as doorbell presses showing camera images of the person walking up to the camera instead of standing at the camera.
DRIV-1430: DS2 time zone issues.
DRIV-1452: Time zone changes on the primary controller would not be mirrored by the DS2, resulting in user functionality and user UI issues.
DRIV-1568: Added firmware support for the UK version of the 2N touchscreen Display Module – 01275-001.

Updated Build for OS 2.10.6
To save you time with installs, Control4 has updated OS 2.10.6 to incorporate all of the latest patches built into it.

Bugs addressed in OS 2.10.6.561784-res patch build
Internal profile is missing off controller freeswitch.
Loss of Feedback on Transport bar once upgrading to 2.10.6.558226-res release build.
Intercom non-functional once upgrading to 2.10.6.558226-res release build.
Camera artifacts when calling from T3 touch screen to T3 touch screen.

Tips & Tricks

A New Way to Say Goodbye…
You know the drill. Turning off a house typically includes turning off all the lights, turning off all media, and maybe a few other pickup items, like locking doors and such. Here’s a new approach for it using three ingredients: a lighting scene, the Room Control driver, and a macro. We’ll give you one way to arrange these, then you can remix them as you need.

The pattern goes like this:
The “House Off” lighting scene’s Is Invoked event, calls a “House Off” macro.
The “House Off” macro calls the Room Control driver’s Room Off action and turns off media in every room.
The macro finishes doing any other tasks, such as locking doors, closing shades, or setting the thermostat to Away.

You probably already understand steps 1 & 3, so here are the clues to put together for what lies behind step 2.
1. Add a Room Control driver and name it something like “Whole Home Control.”
2. Set the driver to control all rooms that have A/V end-points to control.
3. From your “House Off” macro, call the “Whole Home Control” driver’s Room Off action.

All right, now it’s your turn. Is this enough detail that you can put it into action, or did we leave too much out? Is this the kind of thing you want more of from us? I’m especially asking all you who requested more tips and tricks. Let us know by completing this month’s Feedback Survey.

New Technical Doc: “Control4 Zigbee Pro Design Guide and Best Practices”

What’s the best way to design Zigbee for success? Last year, our lead engineers over Zigbee met with Support and Technical Field Managers to document the formula that results in the most reliable Zigbee networks. We now teach this formula in the classroom, and now you can learn it, too. The new “Zigbee Design Guide and Best Practices” completely replaces the previous “Zigbee Best Practices” document. It overturns some of the old recommendations, and clarifies others. Best of all, it breaks down mesh design into simple, easy-to-remember principles for use in every project. It will increase your success rate with Zigbee, so read it today.

A Faster Way to RMA

Sometimes electronics fail or arrive to you flawed. When it happens, you send it back with a “Return Merchandise Authorization” or RMA. If your company is in a country that Control4 serves directly (not through a distribution partner), here’s a tip for how to avoid waiting in the call queue.

Premier Dealers – If your dealership has premier status (Gold, Platinum or Diamond), use Online RMA. A quick web form escorts you through the process…shipping label and all.

Online RMA Form >

Authorized Dealers – Use chat. Control4 Support’s chat agents can process an RMA quickly for you with a much shorter wait time than the phones offer.

Centralized Lighting…the 2019 update

Along with recent updates to the Centralized Lighting product line comes a big update to its online certification, too. The new version has shorter modules, better audio and a structured approach that makes the concepts much easier to learn. In order to purchase from the Centralized Lighting product line, your dealership must have at least one full-time employee who has this certification. (The 2012 edition of this certification still qualifies through March of 2020.) Up your career value and your skill set by getting CL certified.

Making your job easier with the Room Control Driver!

At a class at ISE we asked the 25 dealers in attendance if they knew about the “Room Control” driver. No one did. You need to check it out right now.

Here are three amazing use cases it can do that used to require programming:

  • Volume – Room Control has connections for VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN. No more complex programming. Just connect a keypad button to the driver.
  • House Off – Add an instance of the Room Control driver and configure it with multiple rooms. Now you can connect a keypad button to its ROOM OFF connection, or call it from a single line in programming.
  • Play a Station – Programming a keypad button to play a station has always been complex. Room Control simplifies this, too. Just select a station in one of the five Preset Source fields and then connect the button to a PRESET 1 through 5.

Room Control is in the online drivers. Search for it by name, then read the documentation. You’ll get back the time you spend learning it on the very next job you do.

New & Updated Drivers

By popular request, here is a list of some of the most helpful new drivers in the online database.

  • Qmotion qConnect Roller Shade – This driver replaces the older-style Qmotion qConnect driver, providing support for the new Shades experience in Navigator that debuted with OS 2.10.
  • Weather Station – Updated to use Control4’s weather service rather than Weather Undergrounds API.
  • DSC IT-100 – This new driver for DSC security panels uses the new Security user interface in Navigator. It replaces the older driver which was included in Composer Pro.
  • KNX ETS Import Wizard – updated to support importing of select 3rd-party KNX keypads.
  • Pakedge PE series PDU – various enhancements for integrating power control into a Control4 project.

Pro Tip: You can use Composer Pro’s driver search interface, with the sort order “Modified New->Old” to see which drivers have recently been made available.
